In a further escalation of tension between the world’s two biggest economies, the United States has ordered China to close its consulate in Houston, Texas. The US State Department said it was a necessary measure to protect American intellectual property, including coronavirus vaccine research. Beijing has called the move a political provocation and a violation of international norms. Just hours after the order was issued, firefighters were called to the consulate.
