4 Ways to Increase Web Traffic for Free

I keep hearing a lot of talk these days about how businesses would love to increase traffic to their web site, so I’m going to share 4 more ways that I’ve found to be very effective.

1. Blogging - It doesn’t take an award winning creative copywriter to write short articles about your product or service. All it takes is a little time researching a topic and then writing an article that will be of interest to your target market. Basically anyone can write and submit blog articles, but if you post quality articles on your blog, you will attract the right type of visitors to your web site and establish yourself and your company as an expert in your field.

Vlogging - You can also do video blogs or “vlogging” to engage your audience. With the advent of high-speed internet and social media networks, vlogging has become a great way to stay in front of your target audience.

Blog Comments – In order to get feedback from your customers and those who peruse your site, you have to add Blog Commenting to your web traffic game plan. On any blog, you will almost always find a "comments" link at the end of each post, which encourages dialogue between other consumers and the producers themselves. This dialogue keeps the discussion fresh and friendly and adds a human element to the World Wide Web.

2. Social Media Marketing and Networking - Social Media is fundamentally changing the way our buyers acquire information. We the people practically OWN the media now. Did you see Ashton Kutcher’s CNN challenge? Google Ashton Kutcher and CNN Twitter battle if you haven’t heard about how he reached 1 million members on his Twitter account. Here are a few videos to help those not already part of the social networking sphere understand a few social topics in plain English.

Micro-Blogging (Twitter) - Quite often, people’s gut reaction to Twitter is, “No one needs to know what I’m doing” or “I don’t care what other people are doing.” This may be the initial reaction, but Twitter is a great way to expose your product or service and increase web site traffic. In short, Twitter is a relationship building tool that can be viewed somewhat like a networking event or tradeshow where you are there to mix, mingle, make friends, and generate leads.

Social Bookmarking – Sites like StumbleUpon.com and Delicious.com allow users to save their favorite websites and send them to their friends. But the best part about these sites is that you can see what other people have found interesting enough to tag. Each of the two sites mentioned in this article allow you to browse through the categories of recently added sites or the most popular posts belonging to a certain category like shopping, technology, politics, blogging, news, sports, etc.

Social Networking (Facebook) - One of my favorite social media sites is FaceBook. Facebook isn’t just for interacting with your school or college friends anymore, it’s a place to interact with potential customers and colleagues in your industry or other industries you want to get into. An easy way to do this is to join groups that interest you as well as make friends with people that you want to get to know.

3. Write Electronic Press Releases – A well-written Press Release promoting your product or service can dramatically improve your sales, expose your company to the masses, and greatly enhance your web site traffic. Publicity is one of the most cost-effective web traffic marketing tools there is, and surprisingly, web traffíc can be generated by ink and paper!

4. Forum Posting - Forum posting is another great alternative to paid advertising methods. By contributing to forums, not only will you get people to head over to your web site, but you’ll also get a feel of what kind of products your consumers are looking for. The more you post, the more your name will be out there for all to see, and with posting only taking a few hours each week, your minimal time with create maximum results.

Forum Signature - Be sure to take advantage of the forum signature or commonly called resource box. By editing your forum signature, you’ll create a stamp that will draw interest to your company and web site. All you need is an interesting one-line description and your web address. Your forum posting will do the rest. Every time you post, your signature will appear at the bottom of the comments, and this means that the more you post, the more your signature and subsequently, your company, will be at the fingertips of the forum discussion members.

In my opinion, marketing is different now. The power seems to be in the hands of the consumer. People are looking for information, and they are looking for people that have answers to the concerns or questions they have. It’s all about what the consumer is looking for and what they feel about the information they want. Just as the internet has changed the way we all do business, social media has changed how we relate and engage in relationships. For businesses and salespeople alike there is a new way of communicating with consumers; it’s no longer the dictating approach, but it’s more about listening and engaging your audience by participating in their wants and needs. It’s all about creating a relationship. Start developing those relationships by signing up for Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Digg, Delicious, StumbleUpon, and a local favorite, InHouston.
