Job Hunting In Houston,Texas

he past two years I have been on a job search like no other, It has been very hard, the rules have changed, you can not do a resume like you use to. Then there is the problem in Ohio, there are no jobs. This time around social networking comes in to play more than ever. Yes there is facebook, and twitter etc. Then there is Linkedin where I have made some great connections. I started talking to my favorite Facebook friend Kevin Price of Houston Texas., We started e-mailing each other more and more after I was in Lubbock, Texas on my first job search outside of Ohio. Lubbock was good and I made some contacts, but I did not do enough ground work before I went down. So this year I wanted to learn from my mistakes. So I set my eyes on Houston and I am very pleased with what I have done. I networked and found another friend from talking to Kevin Price to help me with my resume. Then I struck gold.

In Conversations with Kevin, he kept recommending me to a man by the Name of Eric Standlee who has a Group on Linkedin called InHouston, I quickly joined the group and then discovered that there was a web site all to it's own called InHouston, I joined the group and started posting comments and started conversations and then I found the contacts that was going to help me bring my job search home, and get it done. I am very confident that I will be working in Houston in August and I will post another update as soon as everything is in place and confirmed.

But I am sure this would not have happened with out the contacts I made on InHouston . People on this page are professionals and they do not belittle you if your work resume does not include collage degree, but well connected to help you reach your career goals no matter what your educational background is.

I am still here

Posted on July 7, 2012 at 9:13am 0 Comments

Hello People, I have not been around in a while but that does not mean I have not been busy. I have been doing contract work. My past resume reflects strong mail room operations in banking, that is changing due to the fact that in the past two years I have been doing seasonal work with a company called Private School Aide Service here in the Cleveland ,Ohio area. My responsibilities are with the call center to help parents complete their application process so their children can get…

Update on my situation.

Posted on July 12, 2011 at 8:42pm 0 Comments

Sorry it has been so long since I  stop by and see what is going on, but I have had some great success that is very different from my resume. I had a contract position doing work for a group that provides application help for parents who want to send their kids to private schools. They do not provide money to the parents but the help parents and private schools with the application process. They do this nation wide for schools that sign up for the program. Right now the season has ended and…

What does it mean to stop looking for a job? What happens to you when your not working?

Posted on June 13, 2010 at 2:10pm 0 Comments

According to a NYtimes.com article there is a forgotten crowd of people that has given up and stopped looking for a job, and they are not counted in the unemployment numbers. That got me thinking, what does that mean? they stopped searching? Are they lying on the couch with the TV remote clicking the channels? Oh have they applied for so many jobs that they feel there is nothing more that they can… Continue

Losing Your Professional Edge

Posted on June 8, 2010 at 3:22pm 0 Comments

Before losing my job in 2008, I always felt I had things under control. I had lost my job before in 1994 and in 2006. I keep working both those times. In 1994 I worked 2 years at a craft distribution center then went to a mail processing center-print shop.I then found myself at Progressive Insurance for 9 years. They made cutbacks and in 2006 I work temp jobs till I was hired full time at National City Bank, Then the bottom fell out in 2008. In 2008 I had knee replacement surgery, and was… Continue

I can totally relate to my friend, Stephanie, as I've job searched out-of-state many times. Line up your personal networking events (like IH, HNN, Houston Business Journal, Houston Wellness Association, Chambers, Natl Space and Technology Association, United Way, etc., have your professional business cards, and your 5 second commercial (six-word resume). Post articles on Linkedin Groups and on Facebook. Make connections, nurture your network, and Pay-It-Forward. I've been working for a year and still attend events - for my people fix but also to connect people with each other. Nowadays, it's not who you know but who knows you.

To add to Stephanie's comment about Linkedin and target companies, build that network (you're right, we are connected there) and look up contacts at them. Then contact your first-levels for introductions and/or information.

You know two years ago I moved from Michigan to Houston, my situation was slightly different as I had a job in Michigan, but it only lasted 8 months. The advice I can offer to you is to start putting your resume on the job boards, update that resume every couple of weeks, so it stays nice and fresh. I would try to engage with the appropriate recruiters to the industries that you are working in. I had a problem that until I was in town, meaning Houston, employers weren't too excited to offer jobs until they met me face to face. So I would build relationships here, on linkedin, you may also want to make a list of target companies that you want to start looking at and start looking at their jobboards.
