Texas authorities are searching for a driver who fired several shots into a car carrying a family in the Houston area on December 30, killing a seven-year-old girl and wounding the child’s mother and sister.

Surrounded by her family and friends on January 2, LaPorsha Washington begged from a hospital bed at Ben Taub hospital for the public’s help in finding the shooter.

Washington’s seven-year-old daughter Jasmine Barnes was fatally shot, while Washington was wounded in her left shoulder. A six-year-old sister was also injured by shattered glass.

Investigators on December 31 released a surveillance video image of a red, four-door pickup truck from which the driver fired gunshots.

The Harris County sheriff has declined to speculate on what prompted the driver to fire into the car, which was carrying four children, but has called the shooting “totally unprovoked.”
